Jackie Washington 1919-2009

Jackie WashingtonIt is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Jackie Washington on Saturday, June 27th at the age of 89. Over the 38 Northern Lights Festivals to date, Jackie appeared 25 times and gave his name to the annually-presented Jackie Washington Award which is given by NLFB to an artist, group or individual who makes an outstanding contribution and who embodies the spirit of the festival in artistic and other endeavours.

The grandson of a runaway slave, Washington was known as much for the good humoured stories and his infectious laugh as for the songs he sang. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of old-time music, listing almost 1,300 songs in his repertoire.

Submissions to Perform at The Festival

Please submit your application for the festival by sending a link to your Electronic Press Kit (SonicBids, Website, MySpace, etc) to artistic@nlfbsudbury.com. In the interest of saving paper and costs to the artist please do not send in a paper and CD submission package. If asked to perform at the festival, the artist will then be required to send in a recording.

House Concerts

Try to imagine: Having your favourite musicians playing in your living room for you and 20 to 40 of your best friends... That's what the NLFB House Concerts are all about!

Typically, House Concerts are arranged for performers who are passing through Sudbury with no pre-arranged gigs. Concerts are held in private houses, the performers billeted at the home, and promotion done by word-of-mouth through members and friends. A hat is passed at the concert with all proceeds going to the performers - typically a suggested minimum of $14-$18.

To make reservations, or to get email alerts about upcoming concerts, contact Scott Merrifield
at housecon.sud@gmail.com.

Concert listings can also be found at the Acoutic Roof website. Enter "Sudbury" in the city field.
