Jackie Washington 1919-2009
It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Jackie Washington on Saturday, June 27th at the age of 89. Over the 38 Northern Lights Festivals to date, Jackie appeared 25 times and gave his name to the annually-presented Jackie Washington Award which is given by NLFB to an artist, group or individual who makes an outstanding contribution and who embodies the spirit of the festival in artistic and other endeavours.
The grandson of a runaway slave, Washington was known as much for the good humoured stories and his infectious laugh as for the songs he sang. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of old-time music, listing almost 1,300 songs in his repertoire.

Serena Ryder, Joel Plaskett, Hawksley Workman and Norman Foote headline Northern Lights Festival Boréal 2009
Pure raw amazing talent is what has garnered Canada’s own Serena Ryder such great success and genuine accolades so early in her career. Known for her powerful vocal range Ryder has wowed listeners with such hits as “Weak in the Knees”, “Little Bit of Red” and “All for Love”. Ryder has already earned a Canadian Gold Record and a 2008 JUNO for New Artist of the Year. Her new album “is it o.k.” clearly sets the bar higher for artists of her generation. Read more
Willett and T-Bear 2009 Meltdown Winners
Meltdown - Northern Lights Festival Boréal’s annual search for emerging Northern Ontario artists held April 3&4, has produced two outstanding local artists who each won a paid gig at this year’s festival.
Willett started as an array of written songs recorded individually by Laura Willett and Zachary Lamothe for fun. They collaborated and formed a band with drums (Alex Lamothe) and bass (Matthew McGregor), and began performing live immediately. Some of their influences include; Islands, the Kinks, Stars and the Beatles.
Don Thibert, performing under the name T-Bear started writing songs in the early 1970’s. After a stint in the Canadian Forces, Don returned to Canada. In very recent years he has decided to throw his hat back into the ring with a guitar and his songs. They are stories of a world traveler and a wise observer of these modern times.
This year’s festival will be held July 3, 4 & 5 in Bell Park and with some of the most exciting headliners the festival has ever seen, this year’s line-up is sure to excite and entertain the entire community.
Advanced weekend passes for the 38th annual festival, which will take place July 3, 4 & 5 in Bell Park, go on sale April 14, 09 and can be purchased at the office at 19 Grey St or through a number of ticket outlets throughout town.

House Concerts
Try to imagine: Having your favourite musicians playing in your living room for you and 20 to 40 of your best friends... That's what the NLFB House Concerts are all about!
Typically, House Concerts are arranged for performers who are passing through Sudbury with no pre-arranged gigs. Concerts are held in private houses, the performers billeted at the home, and promotion done by word-of-mouth through members and friends. A hat is passed at the concert with all proceeds going to the performers - typically a suggested minimum of $14-$18.
To make reservations, or to get email alerts about upcoming concerts, contact Scott Merrifield
at smerrifield@sympatico.ca.
Concert listings can also be found at the Acoutic Roof website. Enter "Sudbury" in the city field.
