Break out the beer steins and the lederhosen! Northern Lights OktoberFest is back with the German-inspired party of the year. October 2nd & 3rd Bell Park will be transformed into a Bavarian-style beer festival, complete with heated beer hall tents, craft beer vendors and a delicious variety of foods. It’s being presented by Northern Lights Festival Boréal, in partnership with Sudbury’s German Language School.
What is this event all about? First of all, beer. The beer hall will include 6 Canadian craft beer vendors, many with exclusive Oktoberfest brews. Brewers will include: Sudbury’s Stack Brewing, Mantoulin Brewing Company, Big Rock Brewery, Steamwhistle, and more. $20 admission includes a big beer mug, and free non-alcoholic beverages for designated drivers.
True to Northern Lights Festival style, it’s also about music. A full program of live music will be featured, including traditional German music and the best of today’s party music: funk, folk, soul, reggae, rock and beyond. Feature acts include: party-groove outfit Turbo Street Funk, Toronto rock n’ roller Taylor Knox, as well as local soul machine Northern Memphis Revival. Admission also includes access to more intimate shows at the official after hours venue, The Townehouse Tavern.
But really, it’s all about having fun. Complementing the beer and music will be games and activities for kids and grownups alike. Beer Pong enthusiasts and self-professed masters of the game will have the opportunity to defend their honour at the tables. Tether ball, horseshoes, giant beer pong, and other games of skill will add to the festival cheer. Saturday afternoon is family fun day with traditional German and harvest festival games, face painting, scarecrow building and music for all ages. Evenings will be 19+.
What would a festival be without great food? Organizers are stepping up the food component this year with more German-style items including pretzel, bratwurst sausage, schnitzel and more. For a distinctly northern twist, the event will also offer many other flavours that go great with a cold pint. Bring your appetites. Spots for food and craft vendors are still available and those who are interested are encouraged to contact the NLFB office.
To launch the event with bang, organizers will host a ceremonial ‘tapping of the keg’ event on September 29th at the Townehouse, at roughly 5pm. All are invited to attend this launch event, featuring live music and a complete breakdown of the weekend’s activities.
More details about games, foods and activities will be announced as the event approaches. For tickets, full lineup information and more, people are encouraged to visit the event page on Facebook or the website at oktoberfest.nlfb.ca. Alternatively, the NLFB office can be contacted at 705-674-5512.
